Cultural Performance: The West African Harp (Kora) with Sean Gaskell In-Person
Join us for an afternoon of music and history as Sean Gaskell features songs on the kora--a 21 string West African harp.
The kora is traditionally played by oral historians known as Griots. Many songs preserve an 800 year history dating back to the start of the Mandinka Empire.
About Sean Gaskell:
In 2008, 2012, and 2018, Sean Gaskell studied extensively under the instruction of Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh at their home in Brikama, Gambia. In 2023, he spent a month in Senegal studying with Youssoupha Cissokho and his son Mamadou Cissokho. Gaskell has presented at nearly 400 libraries throughout the US and Canada as well as a multitude of K-12 Schools colleges, universities, and assisted living facilities.
